Stone, Timber, Concrete: A Short Field Guide

Three materials we return to on almost every project, and what each one asks of a design.

Stone

Stone asks for patience and rewards it. It is heavy, slow to work, and nearly permanent, which makes it right for the places people touch every day: floors, thresholds, and worktops.

Timber

Timber is warm, forgiving, and easy to repair. It moves with the seasons, so good timber detailing always leaves it room to breathe.

Concrete

Concrete records how it was made. Formwork, pour lines, and the hand of the contractor all remain visible, which is why we treat every concrete wall as a finished surface from the start.
